A Cry For Mercy | Rev’d Dr Taiye Adeola
Listen To The Sermon Below:
TEXT: Matthew 20:29 -34
29 And as they departed from Jericho, a great multitude followed him. 30 And, behold, two blind men sitting by the wayside, when they heard that Jesus passed by, cried out, saying, Have mercy on us, O Lord, thou Son of David. 31 And the multitude rebuked them because they should hold their peace: but they cried the more, saying, Have mercy on us, O Lord, thou Son of David. 32 And Jesus stood still, and called them, and said, What will ye that I shall do unto you? 33 They say unto him, Lord, that our eyes may be opened. 34 So Jesus had compassion on them, and touched their eyes: and immediately their eyes received sight, and they followed him.
We face real situations in life that are beyond us, there are moments we find ourselves helpless and our hearts will cry for help, we face situations that look hopeless and unless an intervention comes our way it looks so impossible, there are situations that get us discouraged, we embark on tasks and we are not making progress and in the process fatigue sets in and unless help is released from God through whatever means he decides progress will not be made. There are times we practically give up hope after several attempts; we don’t feel like trying anymore because of our previous experiences, we feel like packing it up like Peter and his colleagues did in Luke 5:1-10, they washed their nets after trying all night and catching nothing until help came to them.
There are times we get to outwits end after trying all we know to do and how to do it; when we get to points that no one understands why the situation remains as it is; even our righteousness, forthrightness, commitment to God and matters of the kingdom does not seem to work in getting us our heart desires.
It is possible that some people find themselves in situations that are not palatable because of their own error or sinfulness, clearly bearing the consequences of their own action but desire a change in their situation. What remains is to connect to God’s mercy.
This morning I will be speaking on “A Cry for Mercy”
CRY – In this context is to shout or call for. It means not keeping quiet but raising your voice to the one who alone can show mercy – GOD
MERCY – Compassion, Leniency, Forgiveness, Sympathy, Kindness
To have mercy is to show kindness to someone or have compassion to a point of doing good to the person. Mercy is one of God’s attributes by which he relates to human beings and by which he remains God.
ABOUT MERCY
- Mercy is a reflection of God’s person, it is in his nature to show mercy.
- It is God’s exclusive (Exodus.33:19)
- God’s mercy can reach anybody (Rahab the harlot – Joshua.6:17, Mephibosheth – 2 Samuel 9:1-11; Blind Batemeaus – Mark 10:46-52 etc.)
- God’s mercy is all-encompassing – It can touch any aspect of our lives – Healing, fruitfulness, provision, deliverance, marriage, academics, business; the forgiveness of sin etc
- God’s mercy is above judgement and carries recipients above the condemnation that they deserve.
- God’s mercy is everlasting. It does not seize – Lam.3:22
Matthew 20: 29-34 that was read gives us the story of two blind men who cried out for mercy in the particular case of their need for healing.
THE REALITY OF THEIR SITUATION
- Both of them were blind (v.30)
- Both of them sat by the roadside (v.30)
- They were begging for money
- They were restricted and limited
- They were dependent on others for anything they do
- Being Blind means darkness is their regular companion
- They were considered to be unimportant and should be voiceless (v.31)
- They both needed mercy (v.30-31)
TO OBTAIN MERCY
- Be sensitive to divine opportunity – v.30
- Cry to the Lord who can have mercy on you – v.30
- Refuse to be silenced by the crown – v.31
- Acknowledge your situation –v.33
- Be sure of what you really want from the Lord – v.33
WHEN GOD’S MERCY SPEAKS – v.34
- Mercy draws compassion
- Mercy draws divine touch
- Mercy brings restoration
- Mercy brings healing
- Mercy generates relationship with the giver of mercy
